Report on  Witley Parish Council’s Broadband Survey

We had a very pleasing response and were able to send some useful statistics to the Surrey Strategic Partnership to support our campaign for faster broadband in the area.

We probably can’t claim all the credit, but there have been a number of recent developments of interest:

  • Surrey County Council and Surrey Strategic partnership have just launched a new website www.superfastsurrey.org.uk  to provide information about their project to provide superfast broadband to 100% of residents and businesses across the county over the next two years. In particular they would like us all to complete their broadband survey. Could we encourage you to do so, even though you have already given us your information. There is a question about community organisations that are campaigning for better broadband – we would be grateful if you could mention Witley Parish Council there.

  • Two of our councillors - Nick Holder and Christy Crouch are collecting signatures to directly lobby the telecoms companies to provide superfast broadband in the 01428 area. (If you are fortunate to live in the 01483 area you are already on the schedule).

If they have not knocked on your door by 28 October and you want to sign the petition please phone Nick Holder on 01428 682402.

As promised when you completed the Witley Parish Council survey, here is a brief summary of the key findings:

       1.     Only 30% of people get a download speed of more than 4 Mbps.

16% of people get a download speed of less than 1 Mbps.

        2.     66% of people said that they would pay more for faster broadband, assuming reasonable cost.

    3.       BT provides the broadband to over 50% of the parish. No provider is delivering significantly better, or worse, speeds than any of the others.

    4.       Apart from a few properties in the 01483 exchange which get very high download speeds (>20 Mbps) there was no significant difference between the 01483 and the 01428 exchange.

   5.        Upload speeds were typically about a quarter of download speeds.

Thank you,
